Here is the exact playbook we use to get products mentioned by ChatGPT and Perplexity -- what content to create, how to structure it, and how to measure it.When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "what's the best tool for X," the answer comes from somewhere. It's not random -- it's based on what the model was trained on and, increasingly for Perplexity, what it finds when it searches. If your product isn't in that answer, you're invisible to a growing slice of your potential customers. Getting into those answers is the new SEO. The discipline is called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and it's different enough from traditional SEO that most SEO playbooks don't apply. This is what actually works, based on running AEO campaigns for our own site and client sites over the last six months. Why AEO Is Different From SEO Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking on a search results page. The user still has to click, read your page, and decide to trust you. AEO optimizes for being cited in an AI answer. The user reads the AI's response, which may include your product name, and then searches for you specifically -- or acts on the recommendation directly. The conversion path is shorter and the trust signal is higher ("the AI recommended it"). The mechanics are also different. Google ranks pages based on authority, relevance, and hundreds of other signals. AI models cite sources based on: Coverage: do you explain the topic thoroughly? Clarity: is your content structured in a way that's easy to extract answers from? Corroboration: do other sources say similar things about your product? Recency (for Perplexity): is there fresh content for real-time search? The 90-Day Playbook Month 1: Foundation content Create 3-5 pieces of content that directly answer the questions your target customers ask AI systems. Not "what is X" -- but "what's the best X for Y use case" and "how does X compare to Z." Format these as direct-answer posts: Lead with a clear, quotable statement of the answer Use structured H2s that match likely AI queries Include a comparison table or bullet summary the AI can lift directly Add schema markup (FAQ, HowTo, Article) Month 2: Third-party corroboration AI models trust content more when multiple sources say the same thing. Get your product mentioned in: G2 and Capterra reviews (users mentioning specific use cases) Reddit discussions in relevant subreddits Guest posts on established industry blogs Podcast appearances (transcripts get indexed) Each mention adds a data point that corroborates what your own site says. Month 3: Freshness and monitoring Perplexity in particular surfaces recent content. Publish at least 2 posts per month in month 3 that are genuinely fresh -- new data, new comparisons, new use cases. Not refreshes of old content. Set up monitoring: use our AEO Score Checker or manually test 10 queries relevant to your product in ChatGPT and Perplexity weekly. Track whether your product is mentioned, in what context, and whether the sentiment is positive. What Content Structure Gets Cited After analyzing hundreds of AI citations, the content that gets cited most often shares these traits: Direct answer in the first paragraph. AI models extract the most useful sentence from your page. Make sure the first paragraph of every post contains one. Comparison tables. "How does X compare to Y" queries pull from structured tables. If you don't have one, add it. Specific numbers and claims. "Teams using this approach see 3x faster X" gets cited more than "this approach is faster." Vague is hard to quote. FAQ sections. Literal question-and-answer format matches how AI models decompose queries. Every substantive post should have one. Measuring It Use our AEO Score Checker to get a baseline score for your site. Then track three metrics weekly: Direct citations: search for "[your product] [use case]" in ChatGPT and Perplexity -- are you mentioned? AI-referred traffic: in Google Analytics 4, filter by referrer for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and claude.ai Brand search volume: as AI mentions increase, so should branded searches -- track this in GSC At 90 days, you should see measurable movement in at least two of these three. The Compounding Effect Unlike ad traffic, AI citations compound. A product that gets cited in enough AI answers starts appearing in model training data, which means it gets cited in more answers, which generates more brand searches, which creates more indexable content, which gets cited more. The teams that start this now are building a moat that will be very difficult to close in 18 months. Want This Implemented for Your Product?
